About the Journal
The Tropical Journal of Health Sciences (TJHS) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice across the full spectrum of health sciences. The journal provides a scholarly forum for the dissemination of original research, critical reviews, case reports, short communications, commentaries, and editorials that address contemporary issues in health and healthcare.

As the official organ of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin—a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Manpower Development—TJHS seeks to foster regional and global dialogue by publishing contributions from researchers, clinicians, and public health professionals worldwide.
Scope
TJHS welcomes manuscripts in, but not limited to, the following disciplines:
- Clinical Sciences: Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Dentistry, Radiology, Physiotherapy, Nursing Sciences, and other related specialties.
- Public Health and Preventive Medicine: Epidemiology, Health Policy, Health Economics, Health Management, Community and Family Health, Environmental Health, and Global Health.
- Basic Clinical Sciences: Laboratory Medicine, Pathology, Microbiology, Chemical Pathology, Immunology, Hematology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
- Basic Medical Sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, and related disciplines.
- Cross-cutting Fields:Emerging areas in translational and implementation science.
Focus
The journal emphasizes high-quality, evidence-based research with clear implications for clinical practice, public health policy, and health systems strengthening in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in tropical and sub-Saharan Africa. Contributions that highlight innovations, interdisciplinary approaches, and comparative perspectives are especially encouraged.
Peer Review
All papers are double blind reviewed by at least two assessors in the related discipline. However, the final decision to accept or reject any manuscript will be made by the Editor-in-Chief. The Tropical Journal of Health Sciences accords special interest and high priority to: original work; research and training innovations and clinical observations. Reviews take between 2-8 weeks, depending on response of reviewers. Keynote, viewpoint and correspondence are reviewed by one reviewer or the journal editor/s.
Article Processing Charge
A processing charge of Fifty Thousand Naira (₦50,000) is applicable to lead authors affiliated with Nigerian institutions, while lead authors with affiliations to institutions outside Nigeria are required to pay a fee of Fifty US Dollars (USD $50)
Subscription Fees
Subscription fees per journal print issue (excluding postage cost) are as follows:
- Faculty staff: ₦2,000.00
- Students: ₦1,500.00
- Private individuals: ₦3,000.00
- Institutions/Libraries: ₦3,500.00
- Overseas subscription: $20.00 or equivalent
Publication Scheduling
The Tropical Journal of Health Sciences is a quarterly publication, with regular issues released in January, April, July, and October. The journal also publishes special issues as needed, focusing on emerging topics and significant advancements in health sciences.
Editorial Notices
The journal is published quarterly, with four regular issues and occasional special issues comprising one volume, a practice in effect since January 2017. Beginning with Volume 32, Issue 1, January 2025, the journal will maintain its hybrid publication model—online issues will be published under an open-access policy, while print issues will remain subscription-based.
